SERIES 2: Episode 8 – Sickle cell and blood disorders in pregnancy

In this eighth episode of Midwifery Hour series two, Dr Jenny Hall, Editor, MATFLIX was joined by Rachel Kesse-Adu, Consultant Haematologist, Guy’s ant St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Joyce Adu-Amankwah, Specialist Haemoglobinopathies Midwife, St. George’s Hospital NHS Trust.

This episode explores antenatal and newborn testing, care & family support for birthing woman with sickle cell and other haemaglobinopathies during pregnancy, in particular ethnic groups who are most at risk.

Joyce Adu-Amankwah, Specialist Haemoglobinopathies Midwife, and Consultant Haematologist Rachel Kesse-Adu speak about the challenges presented during COVID-19 when providing contemporary care, including an overview of the biological and pathophysiological background of Haemoglobinopathies.

The midwifery aspects of supporting women and families, including client centred care to pregnant and childbearing women with Haemoglobinopathies are highlighted in each presentation.
